Hard Drive Forensic Analysis: Data Recovery

We are entering a new computer age. With every advance in technology, more and more people and places rely on computer technology to get the job done. Some have even used the world of cyberspace to commit crimes. When it comes to busting virtual criminals, the use of data recovery and hard drive forensic work is extremely important. No matter whether they just bin the files and click "empty" on the recycling, or if they try to dismantle their disk drive or destroy it, there are ways of retaining the data and using it to bust these bad guys before it's too late.

Deleting data from your computer does not mean the data is lost forever. All that is happening really is it deletes the information from the system directory, while the data is moved to another place and slowly overwritten as new information comes in. This means you can recover partial documents that were recently deleted. Currently there is no evidence that the overwritten files can be recovered, although Gutmann had a theory it could. A physically damaged hard disk is more difficult to recover data from.

Broken parts can be fixed by a technician, but usually there is no way to avoid any data from being lost, and the amount of data you can recover depends on the extent of the damage. Making back ups of your most important work is a good idea to combat this. Of course this data recovery is not limited to simply computers but to any medium for storing information like a cellphone or usb drive. Anything that can hold information can be used for hard drive forensic analysis. Being certified in the field is important, as having a current understanding is necessary in order to be able to use any data retrieved as evidence in a court of law.

This type of forensics is strictly about analyzing data. Floppy disks containing information sent in by the BTK killer helped lead to his eventually arrest and conviction. They found a name, "Dennis", and a location, which was enough to locate the man and take him off of the streets. With this new information age people are forgetting that nothing is sacred. Computer forensics is going to be very important in the future in determining how we find, arrest and convict criminals. If they think they can use this technology to hide behind they are mistaken.
